"Wonderful Good Cooking" from Amish Country Kitchens (recipes collected and checked by Larry Rogers, edited by Johnny Schrock, copyright 1974, third printing, 1976) was kind enough to point out a recipe with a funny name! So without further ado here's...
Great Grandma's Sheep-Wagon Carrot Cake! You want to know what makes it a "Sheep-Wagon Carrot Cake"? Too bad. The writer parenthetically notes, "(why or how the recipe got its name, we do not know, but we would love to hear the story)." So much for that. Take it away, Turd Ferguson.
Someone who gave up desserts, and ate a lot of mutton instead fell off the sheep wagon when great grandma served this cake?
ReplyDeleteDid they call it a sheep wagon when the sheep shearing teams came to town?
Part of me wants to Google sheep wagon to see if it means something. Another part of me is scared to Google it because of what it may mean now.
Apparently, they're covered wagons that sheepherders lived in on the range, but now they're coming into vogue as tiny houses. The modern meaning is not nearly as colorful as you might have imagined, unless I missed something.
DeleteThe family is clearly very mysterious! Fermentation would make sense for the flavor enhancement, though.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a war cake with added carrots. Also, ye got me. It's added to the "recipes to get around to" files.
ReplyDeleteAll right, I admit. I fell for this one. It's pretty good!
