Funny Name: False Alarm Edition

I'll bet this recipe title from A World of Good Eating (Heloise Frost, 1951) will throw a few dog lovers into panic/ disgust mode.

Alsatian in this case just means the recipe is supposedly from Alsace, according to the New England housewife writer. Alsatian Meat is a casserole of a leftover roast with veggies and noodles, not actual Alsatian meat. Serve with a side of garlic bread and maybe some Greenies Breath Buster Bites.

  1. Love that little doll illustration in the lower righthand corner - the colours of the skirt make it look so soft!

The casserole sounds good, too, but I wonder why the pork has to be fresh when beef or lamb don't.

    1. The book has a lot of little illustrations that make it more fun to go through.

I am not sure about the need for pork to be fresh. My guess would maybe be that it's more likely to overcook and dry out than beef and lamb, but that's a guess based on very little aside from watching "Chopped" judges worry about contestants reheating precooked meat from someone who doesn't personally eat meat.

  2. Alsatian meat could also be a recipe for dog food, well, food for a very specific kind of dog. Cooking for your pet is a certain niche audience these days. Hopefully pets are less judgmental of cooking than people are...
